OJ Electronics meets the legislative requirements of RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC), which limit the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Although RoHS is often referred to as the "lead-free directive", it actually restricts the use of the following six substances:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
PBB and PBDE are flame retardants used in several types of plastic.
OJ Electronics has converted to lead-free soldering processes wherever possible and today all soldering is lead-free in new product generations, all of which comply with the RoHS Directive.
OJ Electronics also meets the legislative requirements of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive 2002/96/EC), which stipulate the collection and recycling of all kinds of electronic waste and which promotes the responsibility of manufacturers to collect and dispose of electronic waste.
Electronic waste is printed circuit boards with components and all types of electronic parts both large and small, including SMDs. Large plastic parts, plastic enclosures, cables and large metal PCB components are taken apart and disposed of separately as much as possible.
In addition, OJ Electronics has internal procedures for waste management, and all new employees are provided training. The instructions for waste management contain the current requirements of local and national authorities. Today, OJ Electronics sorts waste into twenty different subgroups, each of which requires special treatment:
- Cardboard waste
- Ordinary paper waste
- Confidential paper waste
- General waste
- Food waste
- Metal waste
- Tin/lead dross from soldering machine
- Flux waste from soldering machine
- Plastic waste – thermoplastic (lids, frames, component spools, etc.)
- Plastic waste – PVC component tubes
- Plastic waste – plastic film from packaging, blister packs,
- transparent foil, etc.
- Electronic waste
- Printed circuit board waste
- Redundant data storage media
- Cable waste
- Battery waste
- Chemical waste
- Fluorescent tubes
- Glass packaging
- Cloths contaminated with solvents and/or tin paste
